9. The Canny Dog Out-Smarts the Thief
A thief crept close to a house one night
Where a canny dog stood guard,
The dog smelled meat!--It was tossed by the thief
As he tiptoed through the yard.
"BEGONE"! You contemptible thief!"
barked the dog,
And the crook turned and ran, full of fright.
He looked like a thief,
said the canny dog,
And his gifts made me SURE I was right!
MORAL: Always be suspicious of an overly generous gift.
from the book Prayers and Fables and the forthcoming book Aesop's Best: 80 Fables in Verse by William Cleary
