12. The Donkey Adores the Grasshopper's Music
I so adore the sound you make!
A silly donkey said one day
In talking to some grasshoppers
Who he found singing in the hay.
My wildest dream would be to sing
Like holy cherubim on high!
What do you eat that helps you sing
So like the angels in the sky?
You'll be amazed at what we eat:
NOTHING BUT DEW!
the critters said,
So Donkey tried that diet too--
And in a short time was dead.
MORAL: Envy can make fools of us.
from the book Prayers and Fables and the forthcoming book Aesop's Best: 80 Fables in Verse by William Cleary
