THE LARGE SIGHS OF AN ELEPHANT
Some people laugh and say I'm oversize,
O God most high,
Some say weird is my trunk, too bold my eyes.
I want to cry.
My tusks stick out, my feet bizarre and flat,
My skin too tough,
My walk too slow, my legs too long and fat.
I've had enough!
Make me a horse, dear God, make me a deer,
Some noble thing,
So I can fly and race while people cheer
And I'm the king.
Impatient for some answers to this prayer,
I ask again,
Then listen -- to the pregnant silence there --
And sigh: Amen.
